872 – Sālim narrated from his father (may Allah be pleased with him) that
“Ghaylān ibn Salama embraced Islam while he had ten wives, and they too accepted Islam. The Prophet ﷺ instructed him to choose any four of them and keep only those.”
This report was recorded by Aḥmad and al-Tirmidhī. Ibn Ḥibbān and al-Ḥākim declared it sound, whereas al-Bukhārī, Abū Zurʿa, and Abū Ḥātim judged it defective. (1)
Status of the ḥadith: sound through corroborating chains.
It was transmitted by al-Shāfiʿī, Aḥmad, al-Tirmidhī, Ibn Mājah, Ibn Ḥibbān, al-Ḥākim, and al-Bayhaqī through various routes from Maʿmar, from al-Zuhrī, from Sālim ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar.
Al-Tirmidhī said: “I heard al-Bukhārī say, ‘This ḥadith is not preserved.’”
In his Talkhīṣ, he added that Imam Muslim considered Maʿmar mistaken in it, and al-Ḥākim reported from Muslim that this is one of the narrations in which Maʿmar erred while in Basra.
Aḥmad said: “This ḥadith is not authentic, although practice accords with it,” and he deemed it defective because Maʿmar alone linked the chain. Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr remarked: “All its routes are flawed.”
Al-Ḥāfiẓ, after citing the narration through al-Nasāʾī with his chain, commented: “The transmitters in this isnād are reliable,” and noted that al-Dāraqutnī also related it through the same route.
I say: This constitutes a good supporting narration and a strong indication that the report is connected from Sālim to Ibn ʿUmar. Al-Ḥāfiẓ further stated that Ibn al-Qaṭṭān used it as evidence for the soundness of Maʿmar’s narration.
Ibn Kathīr said: “The ḥadith was transmitted by al-Shāfiʿī and Aḥmad, and the narrators in this chain are…"
