4 – A woman does not leave her husband’s marital bond after embracing Islam except through divorce or an equivalent legal measure; therefore, the existing marriage remains in force after conversion without the need for a new contract. This is the position of the majority of scholars, among them the three Imams—Mālik, al-Shāfiʿī, and Aḥmad. The Ḥanafīs, however, validate only those marriages that already accord with Islamic requirements, whereas the outward sense of the ḥadith supports the view of the majority.
