- Mawālī: the plural of mawlā; it refers to anyone whose ancestry is non-Arab.
- Ḥāʾikan: from ḥāka, yaḥūku, ḥawkan and ḥiyāka, meaning “to weave”; ḥiyāka is the weaving of cloth, and a ḥāʾik is the person who weaves garments. Its plural is ḥāka.
- Or ḥajjāman: ḥijāmah is the drawing of blood by means of a cupping glass, and the ḥajjām is the professional who performs cupping.
What may be drawn from the ḥadīth:
- The ḥadīth shows that lineage-based compatibility is considered in marriage and that all Arabs are compatible with one another, with no distinction between Quraysh and the rest of the Arabs. Sharḥ al-Iqnāʿ states: “A non-Arab is not a suitable match for an Arab woman, for the Arabs require lineage compatibility, disdain marrying freedmen, and regard it as a defect and a disgrace.” This is supported by the ḥadīth: “Indeed Allah chose Kinānah from the descendants of Ishmael, chose Quraysh from Kinānah, chose Banū Hāshim from Quraysh, and chose me from Banū Hāshim.”
- The scholars of Dirʿiyyah said: It is unanimously permissible for a Fāṭimid woman to marry a non-Fāṭimid man; ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib married his daughter to ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb, and their example suffices.
- The report also indicates that the mawālī are peers among themselves yet are not peers of the Arabs; the texts and scholarly statements on this were cited earlier in the introduction.
- The ḥadīth further implies that vocational compatibility is relevant: a weaver, a cupper, or a garbage collector is not considered the equal of those who hold prestigious professions and high offices.
- This ḥadīth has been criticised: Abū Ḥātim rejected it, al-Dāraqutnī said it is not authentic, and Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr deemed it objectionable and fabricated; all its chains are weak. Despite its weakness, it is contradicted by stronger aḥādīth that will be mentioned, God willing.
- Compatibility is taken into account for the man, not for the woman; the absence of compatibility qualities in a woman is disregarded. Compatibility consists of religion, status, freedom, a non-demeaning occupation, and financial ability. It is not considered with respect to the mother, for a child derives honour from his father, not
