863 – Rabīʿ ibn Sabrah, on the authority of his father, related that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “I had previously granted you permission to contract temporary marriage with women, but Allah has now made it unlawful until the Day of Resurrection. Whoever still has a woman under such a contract must release her, and do not take back anything you have given them.” Reported by Muslim, Abū Dāwūd, al-Nasāʾī, Ibn Mājah, Ahmad, and Ibn Ḥibbān. (3)
— Points derived from the ḥadīths —
- The term mutʿa is taken from tamattuʿ (enjoyment), for the intent is that a man enjoys companionship with the woman to whom he is temporarily married for a set period. The contract is defined as a man marrying a woman for a term that may be specified or left unspecified.
