Tawḍīḥ al-AḥkāmAbd Allah al-Bassam

– at-tasākhīn, with an open tāʾ: a type of khuff (leather footgear). Thaʿlab said that the word has no singular form; it simply means khuffs.

Points derived from the hadith

  1. It is permissible to wipe over the turban and over leather socks while travelling.
  2. What is permitted for the traveller is likewise permitted for the resident; the concession is general.
  3. The report shows the need to teach soldiers, combatants, and travellers the rulings they require. It therefore alerts governors, military commanders, and senior security officials to provide their forces with sound religious instruction, especially in the matters they will face in practice.
  4. When guiding the general public, it is most appropriate to supply them with the rulings they presently need and that arise within their immediate circumstances.
  5. The manner of wiping the turban is to pass a wet hand over its exterior only, not its underside, because the upper part of the turban resembles the outer surface of the khuff. It is not required to wipe the portion of the head that customarily remains uncovered.
  6. Those whom the Prophet ﷺ instructed to wipe over their head-bands and khuffs were numerous soldiers and travellers. Given the Companions’ known austerity regarding worldly goods, most of their turbans and khuffs were surely old and torn, exposing parts of the obligatory area; yet they still wiped over them. The scholarly disagreement on this will be discussed, if Allah wills.

Scholarly disagreement
The jurists have differed over the permissibility of wiping over a torn khuff:
Imams al-Shāfiʿī and Ahmad and their followers hold that it is impermissible, even if there is only a single hole, or the hole is small. Their argument is that whatever part of the obligatory area becomes exposed must be washed, while what remains covered may be wiped; and washing cannot be combined
