846 – ʿĀmir ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Zubayr relates from his father that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Make the marriage public.” It was recorded by Aḥmad, and al-Ḥākim ruled it authentic. (1)
Hadith grading:
The report is ḥasan (sound). It is transmitted by Aḥmad, Ibn Ḥibbān, al-Ṭabarānī, and al-Ḍiyāʾ al-Maqdisī through the chain of ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Aswad, from ʿĀmir ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Zubayr, from his father, traced back to the Prophet. Its chain is ḥasan and its transmitters are well-known and reliable. Al-Ḥākim declared it authentic, as did Ibn Daqīq al-ʿĪd in al-Ilmām, a work in which he pledged to cite only sound hadiths.
Vocabulary:
• Aʿlinū: to manifest, make something openly known—the opposite of concealing. Hence iʿlān al-nikāḥ means publicly announcing the marriage.
Points derived from the hadith:
1 – The complete wording is: “Make the marriage public and beat the ghirbāl,” the ghirbāl being the frame drum (duff).
2 – Public announcement contrasts with secrecy. Several hadiths command both announcing the marriage and striking the ghirbāl, for beating the duff serves as a stronger public signal.
3 – These narrations establish the legitimacy of publicizing the marriage and celebrating it with the duff, provided no unlawful element accompanies the gathering—such as a woman singing in a soft, alluring voice audible to most bystanders, or lyrics marked by frivolity and explicit amorous content.
