845 – Sahl ibn Saʿd al-Saʿidi (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated:

“A woman came to the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace be upon him) and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, I have come to give myself to you in marriage.’ The Messenger of Allah looked her up and down, raising his gaze and lowering it, then he bowed his head. When the woman realised that he had not passed any judgement concerning her, she sat down.

A man from among his Companions stood up and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, if you have no need of her, then marry her to me.’ He asked, ‘Do you have anything (to give as a dowry)?’ The man replied, ‘By Allah, no, O Messenger of Allah.’ He said, ‘Go to your family and see whether you can find anything.’ He went away and soon returned, saying, ‘By Allah, I have found nothing.’ He said, ‘Look— even if it is only an iron ring.’ He went off and came back, saying, ‘By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, I could not find even an iron ring. All I have is this lower garment’—Sahl added: he had no cloak—‘so let her have half of it.’

The Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace be upon him) said, ‘What could she do with your garment? If you wear it, she will have none of it, and if she wears it, you will have none of it.’ So the man sat down; when his sitting grew lengthy, he rose to leave. The Messenger of Allah noticed him turning away and ordered that he be called back. When he came, he asked, ‘How much of the Quran do you have with you?’ He replied, ‘I know such-and-such a surah and such-and-such a surah,’ enumerating them. He asked, ‘Do you recite them by heart?’ He said, ‘Yes.’ He said, ‘Go, for I have given her to you in marriage for the Quran you have memorised.’”

Agreed upon, and the wording is Muslim’s. In another of Muslim’s narrations: “Go, for I have married her to you, so teach her from the Quran.”
