need, provided the look is free of desire. The man, on the other hand, may only look at her when a need exists, so in this situation the woman’s licence to look is even stronger.
8 – Muslims with regard to this question stand at opposite extremes. Some are rigid and over-zealous: they have effectively suspended this unanimously accepted sunnah by preventing prospective suitors from seeing their daughters or female wards. This runs counter to the clear, sound dictates of the Sharia.
Others go to the other extreme, giving suitors free rein: they allow the two to be alone and to stroll together in remote, secluded places. This is unlawful and impermissible.
The best course is to keep strictly to the rulings of the Sacred Law: the sunnah is not to be abandoned, nor may one overstep the limits set by Allah Most High.
9 – One wording of the hadith states, “When one of you proposes marriage, there is no sin upon him if he looks at her,” while another version related by Ahmad and Ibn Majah reads, “When Allah places the intention to marry a woman in a man’s heart, there is no harm in his looking at her.”
These texts prove that it is forbidden to look at the face of a woman to whom one is not related, as well as at the parts of her body that only her suitor is permitted to view. This, God willing, is the correct position, and no weight is given to weak opinions that rest on neither truth nor sound reasoning.
10 – Knowing that looking at a non-mahram woman is prohibited except when there is a need, the jurists have divided such looking into eight categories, of which the first three are as follows:
- An adult man looking, without need, at an adult free woman who is unrelated to him: it is not lawful for him to look at any part of her, even her connected hair.
- An adult man looking at a woman who is not normally desired, such as one who is elderly or unattractive: he may look at her face.
- An adult man looking for the purpose of giving testimony about a woman or conducting business with her: he may look at her face and her hands.
