The techniques are as follows:
Internal artificial insemination
First technique: A sperm specimen is taken from a married man and injected into the appropriate location within his wife’s vagina or uterus so that, by a natural process, it meets the ovum released from her ovary. Fertilization then occurs, and—by Allah’s permission—the embryo implants in the uterine wall just as it would after normal intercourse. This method is used when the husband suffers from a condition that prevents his seminal fluid from reaching the proper place during coitus.
Second technique: A sperm specimen is taken from one man and injected into the appropriate location within the wife of another man so that fertilization takes place internally and the embryo implants in her uterus, as in the first technique. This procedure is employed when the husband is sterile and his semen contains no viable sperm, so a sample is obtained from someone else.
External (test-tube) fertilization
Third technique: A sperm specimen from the husband and an ovum from his wife’s ovary are placed together under specific physical conditions in a laboratory test tube so that the husband’s sperm fertilizes his wife’s ovum in that medium. After the resulting embryo begins to divide and multiply, it is—at the appropriate time—transferred from the test tube into the uterus of that same wife, the owner of the ovum, so that it may implant in the uterine wall, grow, and develop like any other fetus until, at the end of the normal gestational period, she gives birth to a boy, a girl, or even twins. This is the “test-tube baby,” a scientific achievement that Allah has made possible; numerous such children—male, female, and twins—have already been born, as reported in international newspapers and other media outlets.
