any dust that may have settled there, for it is the upper side of the khuff that people see, and it is best that the worshipper appear in the highest state of cleanliness. Allah knows best.
7 – The wiping of the khuff mentioned in the hadith of al-Mughirah is expressed in general terms, whereas the present hadith sets out its precise manner and method.
Scholarly disagreement:
The jurists differed as to whether the wiping must cover the entire upper surface of the khuff:
The stronger view is that one wipes over most of it, for the obligation is to wipe upon them, not with them.
They also differed over whether both feet should be wiped together, as is done with the ears, or whether the right foot should be given precedence:
The preferred opinion is to precede the right foot, because the two feet are independent limbs, unlike the ears, which are attached to the head. Moreover, wiping them is an extension of washing them, and in washing it is recommended to start with the right side. The hadith of ʿAishah plainly encourages beginning with the right when performing purification, and wiping over the khuffayn is part of that purification. Hence it is Sunnah to pass the fingers of one’s hands over the uppers of the feet—wiping the right foot with the right hand, then the left foot with the left hand, spreading one’s fingers as one does so. However he wipes, the act is valid.
There is unanimous agreement that the khuff is wiped only once and that repeating the wipe is not a Sunnah.
