- The ḥadith therefore demonstrates that walāʾ is not itself inherited; rather, it is a basis through which inheritance is transmitted. Whatever wealth a freedman accumulates and leaves behind becomes, at his death, the estate of his patron’s agnates—those male relatives who inherit in their own right—if the freedman has no heirs by blood. For walāʾ is a bond like the bond of kinship. Since the Prophet compared walāʾ to lineage, and lineage is a recognized cause of inheritance, walāʾ functions in the same way by unanimous agreement.
