The parents and the immediate children have the closest connection to the deceased, for they inherit without any intermediary. The father therefore precludes the grandfather, and a grandfather precludes any grandfather above him.
The mother precludes the grandmothers, and each grandmother precludes the one above her. A son precludes a grandson, and every nearer grandson precludes the more remote grandsons below him.
Full siblings are precluded by a son, by any grandson—no matter how far removed—and by the father and the grandfather, however high, which is the sound view. Paternal half-siblings are precluded by everyone who precludes full siblings, as well as by a full brother.
– The sons of brothers (nephews) are precluded by the father, by every paternal grandfather, and by the brothers.
Paternal uncles are precluded by brothers and by their sons.
Uterine siblings are precluded by all descendants without exception, and by the male ascendants.
A son’s daughter is precluded when there are two or more direct daughters.
Every more remote son’s daughter is likewise precluded by two or more of those above her, unless the lower granddaughters are accompanied by an equal or more remote male descendant who converts them into residuary heirs.
Paternal half-sisters are precluded by two or more full sisters, unless they are accompanied by a brother who converts them into residuary heirs.
This is a concise outline we have presented to clarify the rulings of inheritance while explaining this comprehensive hadith. The jurists have discussed this chapter of fiqh at great length and have devoted numerous independent works to it. Allah is the One who grants success.
