53 – Al-Mughira ibn Shu‘bah reported: “I was with the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, when he performed ablution. I reached out to remove his two khuffs (leather socks), but he said, ‘Leave them, for I put them on while they were both pure,’ and he wiped over them.” Agreed upon.
The Four, except for al-Nasa’i, also narrate from him: “The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, wiped the upper and lower surfaces of the khuff,” and its chain is weak. (1)

Hadith grading
The additional wording transmitted by the Four other than al-Nasa’i, the author says, has a weak chain.
Al-Talkhîṣ states: “He wiped the upper and lower surfaces of the khuff,” reported by Ahmad, Abū Dāwūd, al-Tirmidhī and others, through Thawr ibn Yazīd from Rajāʾ ibn Ḥaywah from the scribe of al-Mughira, from al-Mughira; and Ahmad regards the scribe of al-Mughira as weak.
Ibn Abī Ḥātim said in al-ʿIlal, quoting his father and Abū Zurʿah: the report of al-Walīd is not preserved. Al-Tirmidhī stated: This ḥadīth is defective; no one related it as a musnad from Thawr except al-Walīd.
Vocabulary
– fa-ahwaytu: Al-Miṣbāḥ says: ahwā ilayh with an alif means he stretched out his hand to take something that is near; if it is distant, one says hawā ilayh without the initial alif.
– li-anziaʿ: nazaʿa–yanziʿu (form I), to pull something out; here it refers to removing his khuffs from his feet, for al-nazaʿ is the act of extracting something from its place.
