The ḥadith, “Leave that which stirs doubt for that which leaves no doubt,” means that whenever you feel uncertain about something, you should simply refrain from it.
Shaykh al-Islam said: “Waraʿ (scrupulousness) is to abandon whatever one fears may be harmful in the Hereafter.”
- From this we learn that waraʿ is only meaningful when accompanied by fear and the presence of a genuine doubt; abstinence without those two factors is not waraʿ at all but mere obsessive misgiving.
Al-Ghazālī writes in the Iḥyāʾ: “The waraʿ of the righteous is to forgo anything that might conceivably be prohibited, provided that this possibility has some real basis. If no such basis exists, then it is merely the waraʿ of those plagued by whisperings.”
