2 – The second kind is a gift whose donor seeks worldly reward and expects some recompense for it. Such a person is the one alluded to in the Almighty’s words: “and do not give a gift, seeking to receive in greater measure” (Q 74:6); that is, do not bestow something while aiming to gain from it something larger in return.
- If someone gives a gift for this purpose—hoping that the recipient will repay him—its ruling mirrors that of a sale: should he receive a return that satisfies him, the matter is settled; if not, he may reclaim his gift. This differs from the first, unrestricted type of gift, for the giver there has no right to take it back, as mentioned earlier.
3 – The gift discussed in this ḥadith belongs to the category the Lawgiver has permitted its owner to retrieve when he is not recompensed; it is therefore of the second type, a gift given for worldly compensation. Allah knows best.
