807 – Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet ﷺ said, “Exchange gifts and you will love one another.” It was recorded by al-Bukhari in Al-Adab al-Mufrad and by Abu Yaʿla with a sound chain (1).
Hadith grading:
Its chain is judged hasan.
Al-Bukhari narrated it in Al-Adab al-Mufrad, and Abu Yaʿla likewise with a sound chain.
It has a corroborating report from Anas, cited by Ibn Mundah, in whose chain appears Bakr ibn Bukar—he is weak, yet Ibn al-Qaṭṭān remarked that his narrations are not objectionable.
Al-Hafiz stated in al-Talkhis that the report is hasan.
The hadith is further supported by transmissions from ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAmr, ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿUmar, and ʿAʾishah.
Vocabulary of the hadith:
• tahādū: an imperative verb built on the mufāʿalah pattern, which originally conveys reciprocal action between two parties.
• the gift (al-hadīyah): whatever is presented with the aim of fostering affection and friendship.
Al-Miṣbāḥ says: “ahdaitu ar-rajul kadha (with an initial alif) means, ‘I sent it to him as an honour,’ and it is called hadīyah (with a double yāʾ) and nothing else.”
The jurists define a gift as something offered to show honour and goodwill.
