803 – ʿĀʾishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to accept a gift and would give something in return for it.” Collected by al-Bukhārī (1).
804 – Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: “A man presented the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with a she-camel, so he recompensed him for it and asked, ‘Are you satisfied?’ The man replied, ‘No.’ He added more and again asked, ‘Are you satisfied?’ He replied, ‘No.’ He added more and asked, ‘Are you satisfied?’ The man said, ‘Yes.’” Reported by Aḥmad and authenticated by Ibn Ḥibbān (2).
Status of ḥadīth 804:
The ḥadīth is ṣaḥīḥ (sound). Al-Talkhīṣ states that it was narrated by Aḥmad and Ibn Ḥibbān through the chain of Ibn ʿAbbās, and that al-Ḥākim also recorded it, declaring it authentic and “in accordance with Muslim’s criteria.” Al-Haythamī commented, “The narrators in Aḥmad’s chain are those of the Ṣaḥīḥ,” and al-Albānī likewise graded it authentic in Irwāʾ al-Ghalīl.
Vocabulary note for ḥadīth 804:
– yuthību ʿalayhā: from athāba – yuṯīb, meaning “to give something in return.” Al-Muḥīṭ explains that thawāb (recompense) is a general term for reward or repayment for deeds, good or bad, though it is most often used for reward in the Hereafter. In the present ḥadīth it signifies that the Prophet ﷺ would reciprocate a gift with something equal to it or better.
