794 – ʿAlqamah ibn Wāʾil relates from his father (may Allah be pleased with him) that “the Prophet ﷺ granted him a tract of land in Ḥaḍramawt.” Reported by Abū Dāwūd and al-Tirmidhī, and declared authentic by Ibn Ḥibbān.⦗1⦘
Degree of authenticity:
Al-Tirmidhī and Ibn Ḥibbān both graded the ḥadīth ṣaḥīḥ. Al-Talkhīṣ adds: it was narrated by Aḥmad, Abū Dāwūd and al-Tirmidhī—who deemed it sound—and also by al-Bayhaqī, al-Ṭabarānī and Ibn Ḥibbān, the latter two likewise authenticating it.
Key terms:
– Aqṭaʿahu: i.e. he conferred ownership of the land upon him, granting him exclusive rights to it. Iqṭāʿ (land grant) may constitute full transfer of title or simply a concession for use and benefit. The ruler bestows such grants upon those he considers deserving, and the term is most often applied to land that is free of prior claims and protected ownership.
– bi-Ḥaḍramawt: a compound place-name referring to the well-known region in the southern Arabian Peninsula whose present-day capital is the city of al-Mukallā.
