Tawḍīḥ al-AḥkāmAbd Allah al-Bassam

52 – ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “None of you performs wuḍūʾ and perfects that wuḍūʾ, then says, ‘I testify that there is no god but Allah alone, without partner, and I testify that Muḥammad is His servant and Messenger,’ without the eight gates of Paradise being opened for him so that he may enter through whichever of them he wishes.” Related by Muslim and al-Tirmidhī, who added: “O Allah, place me among those who constantly repent, and place me among those who purify themselves.” (1)

Grade of the ḥadith
The report is found in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, and therefore needs no further scrutiny. As for al-Tirmidhī’s additional wording, he stated that its chain shows inconsistency and that none of it is sound; Aḥmad Shākir likewise deemed it weak. Yet the wording is supported by other narrations: al-Bazzār and al-Ṭabarānī (in al-Awsat) relate it from Thawbān; Ibn Mājah from Anas; and al-Ḥākim in al-Mustadrak from Abū Saʿīd, along with further corroborations. Hence al-Mubārakfūrī and al-Albānī judged it acceptable.

Vocabulary of the ḥadith
• “None of you performs wuḍūʾ and perfects the wuḍūʾ”: mā is a negating particle used in Hijāzī Arabic that governs both subject and predicate; its subject here is aḥad (“anyone”), and its predicate is yatawaḍḍaʾ (“performs wuḍūʾ”). The preposition min is extra, and aḥad is in the genitive position because of this extra min, functioning as the subject of mā. The faʾ in faysbugh (“and perfects”) carries the meaning of thumma (“then”); it is not a coordinating faʾ indicating simple sequence, for the perfection of wuḍūʾ is not something delayed that would be joined by a true coordinating faʾ. Accordingly, the sense of the faʾ here is that of thumma, which expresses orderly progression.
• faysbugh: isbāgh means to complete and perfect something, ensuring water reaches the creases and folds of each limb during wuḍūʾ.
