No authentic ḥadith at all reports separating the mouth-rinse from the nose-cleansing. Abu Dawud’s wording is: “He rinsed his mouth with the same hand in which he had taken the water,” and al-Nasa’i’s version says: “He rinsed his mouth with the hand with which he took the water.”
As for the report of Talhah ibn Musarrif, it is transmitted only from his father on the authority of his grandfather, and the grandfather is not known to have been a Companion. Al-Nawawi said: “The scholars are unanimous that it is weak,” and al-Hafiz likewise remarked: “Its chain is weak.”
Accordingly, the established descriptions are:
1 – That one should rinse the mouth and inhale water into the nose three times with three separate scoops; this is understood from the ḥadith of ʿAli and the ḥadith of ʿAbd Allah ibn Zayd recorded in the two Ṣaḥīḥs.
2 – The report of Talhah, which separates the mouth-rinse from the nose-cleansing by taking a separate scoop for each, though it does not state how many scoops are to be taken in total.
