11 – Shaykh Taqī al-Dīn said: As for striking a suspect when it is known that the money is in his possession and he is concealing it, in order to make him reveal its whereabouts, there is no doubt about the permissibility of that—just as he may be beaten so that he will pay a debt he is able to settle. This is exactly what is authentically reported in the case of the uncle of Ḥuyayy ibn Akhtab, who was tortured until he produced the hidden wealth.
12 – Concerning the phrase, “Speak the truth even if it is bitter,” it means that Allah, in His bounty and mercy, does not hold one to account for what the soul may crave, even when those cravings conflict with truth and justice, so long as the person keeps them within himself, does not act upon his whims and desires, and instead compels his lower self to uphold the truth. Indeed, for waging this inner struggle he is rewarded and granted divine recompense.
