759 – Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ dispatched ʿUmar to take charge of the charity (ṣadaqah).” The hadith is agreed upon (1).
760 – Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that “the Prophet ﷺ sacrificed sixty-three head of livestock and instructed ʿAli (may Allah be pleased with him) to slaughter the rest.” Muslim relates this report (2).
Key terms in Hadith 760
• naḥr: piercing a camel in the lower neck with a knife; this method of slaughter is specific to camels.
• sixty-three: camels offered as sacrificial gifts to the Sacred House, out of a total of one hundred. Some scholars see in this number an allusion to the Prophet’s blessed lifespan.
• slaughter the rest: that is, perform the naḥr on the remaining animals, which numbered thirty-seven. Some have taken this as a hint at his caliphate lasting that many years.
