751 – Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: “A man from among us died. We washed him, applied ḥanūṭ to him, and shrouded him. Then we brought him to the Messenger of Allah, Allah bless him and grant him peace, and said, ‘Will you pray over him?’ He stepped forward a few paces and then asked, ‘Does he owe any debt?’ We replied, ‘Two dinars.’ He turned away, whereupon Abu Qatadah assumed responsibility for them. We returned to the Prophet, and Abu Qatadah said, ‘The two dinars are on me.’ The Messenger of Allah asked, ‘Has the creditor’s right been secured and the deceased cleared of them?’ He said, ‘Yes.’ So the Prophet offered the funeral prayer for him.” Related by Ahmad, Abu Dawud, and al-Nasa’i, and authenticated by Ibn Hibban and al-Hakim.⦗1⦘
