748 – Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet ﷺ said, “A neighbor must not prevent his neighbor from fixing a beam in his wall.” Abu Hurayrah would then say, “Why do I see you turning away from this teaching? By Allah, I shall fling it between your shoulders!” Agreed upon.⦗1⦘
Vocabulary of the ḥadīth
– la yamnaʿ (“must not prevent”): la is a negating particle. Another narration reads la yamnaʿanna, where la functions as a prohibitive particle and the verb is built on fatḥ because it is attached to the emphatic nūn, placing it in the jussive mood.
– jārahu (“his neighbor”): the wording indicates the adjacent neighbor whose wall is close enough for a beam to rest on it.
– an yaghruza (“to fix/insert”): with yāʾ, ghayn, rāʾ, then zāʾ. It means to embed the end of a piece of wood in his neighbor’s wall so that a roof can be supported. The particle an with the verb forms a verbal noun: “the insertion of a beam in his neighbor’s wall.”
– khashabah (“a beam”): some versions of al-Bukhārī have the singular, while most have the plural. Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr said both readings appear in the Muwaṭṭaʾ, and the meaning is identical, for the singular denotes the genus.
– ʿanhā (“from it”): the pronoun refers to this sunnah mentioned in his sermon when he was governor of Madinah.
– la-armianna bihā (“I shall fling it”): he may be referring to this sunnah, or to the beam itself. The meaning is: if you do not accept this ruling and act upon it willingly, I shall place the beam upon your shoulders against your will. He said this emphatically while serving as their governor.
