740 – ʿAmr b. al-Sharīd reports from his father – may Allah be pleased with him – that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“The procrastination of a solvent debtor makes lawful his honor and his punishment.”
Related by Abū Dāwūd and al-Nasāʾī; al-Bukhārī records it in suspended form, and Ibn Ḥibbān declared it authentic. (1)
Hadith grading
The report is ḥasan (fairly sound).
• In al-Talkhīṣ it is noted that Aḥmad, Abū Dāwūd, al-Nasāʾī, Ibn Mājah, Ibn Ḥibbān, al-Ḥākim, and al-Bayhaqī all transmitted it through the chain of ʿAmr b. al-Sharīd from his father, while al-Bukhārī cited it in hanging form.
• In Bulūgh al-Amānī it is mentioned that Ibn Ḥibbān declared the hadith ṣaḥīḥ, while al-Ḥāfiẓ ruled it ḥasan, stating in Fatḥ al-Bārī, “its chain is ḥasan.” Al-Ḥākim said, “The narration possesses a sound isnād,” and al-Dhahabī agreed.
Vocabulary
• layyu l-wājid: the verbal noun layy (with an open lām and a doubled yāʾ) means procrastination—delaying payment without excuse.
• al-wājid: the affluent person who is able to discharge the debt.
• yuḥall: passive form, “is made permissible.”
• ʿirḍuhu: “his honor,” i.e., the creditor may speak against him; Wakīʿ observed that here ʿirḍ refers to lodging a complaint about him.
