718 – Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: “I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ declare: ‘When you engage in ʿīnah sales, cling to the tails of cattle, become content with tilling the soil, and abandon jihad, Allah will place a humiliation over you that He will not lift until you return to your religion.’”
Abū Dāwūd recorded it through the narration of Nāfiʿ from Ibn ʿUmar, though there is some discussion about its chain. Aḥmad has a similar wording through the narration of ʿAṭāʾ, whose transmitters are reliable, and Ibn al-Qaṭṭān deemed it authentic (1).
Degree of authenticity
The hadith is classed as ḥasan.
• The author writes: “Its isnad is subject to criticism because it contains ʿAṭāʾ al-Khurāsānī.”
• Al-Dhahabī observed: “This is one of his anomalous reports.”
• The version that Ibn al-Qaṭṭān authenticated is nevertheless defective, for a report is not automatically sound simply because its narrators are trustworthy; al-Bayhaqī detailed the flaws in its various routes.
• Ibn Ḥajar stated in Talkhīṣ al-Ḥabīr: “The soundest narration censuring the ʿīnah sale is that transmitted by Aḥmad and al-Ṭabarānī; it has several chains.”
• Al-Suyūṭī graded it ḥasan in al-Jāmiʿ al-Ṣaghīr.
• Ibn ʿAbd al-Hādī wrote in al-Muḥarrar: “Its chain’s men are those of the two Ṣaḥīḥs.”
• Al-Shawkānī remarked in Nayl al-Awṭār: “It has chains that mutually reinforce one another.”
Vocabulary
• ʿīnah: pronounced with a kasrah on the ʿayn and a sukun on the yāʾ; some read it with a fathah.
