• “Do not do that”: the particle lā here is prohibitive, and the verb that follows it is put in the jussive mood.
• “Sell the jamʿ”: that is, sell the dates called jamʿ for dirhams.
• Jamʿ (pronounced with a fatḥah on the jīm, a silent mīm, and ending with an ʿayn) refers to dates that are a mixture of various, unidentified kinds that people do not particularly desire. Al-Khaṭṭābī said: “It is any variety of dates whose specific name is unknown.” The word can bear all these meanings.
• “Then, with the dirhams, buy janīb”: meaning, purchase choice dates (janīb) with the money.
• “Weighing”: whatever is sold by weight is subject to the same ruling as what is sold by measure—no excess between the two sides is permitted.
