Tawḍīḥ al-AḥkāmAbd Allah al-Bassam

2 – Facial hair falls into two categories:
First: sparse hair through which the skin is visible. This hair must be washed, together with the skin beneath it.
Second: thick hair that hides the skin. In this case one is obliged to wash its outer surface, while it is recommended to run one’s fingers through the inner part. During ghusl (the full ritual bath), however, the hair itself must be washed and the water made to reach the skin and the roots.
3 – This distinction is drawn from a careful survey of the legal texts on ablution: whatever of the face is exposed must be washed, including the skin beneath sparse hair; and whatever is covered by dense hair—such as the Prophet’s ﷺ beard—is to be combed through with water.
