702 – Abū Hurayrah (d. 59 AH) narrated that “the Prophet ﷺ forbade the sale of maḍāmīn and malāqīḥ.” Al-Bazzār recorded the report, yet there is weakness in its chain. (1)
Grade of the hadith:
The narration is an authentic mursal report. It is also transmitted with a strong chain as mawqūf from Ibn ʿUmar, and that version carries the force of a marfūʿ report. Allah knows best.
Ibn Ḥajar states in al-Talkhīṣ: Isḥāq ibn Rāhawayh and al-Bazzār related it through Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyab from Abū Hurayrah; within the chain is Ṣāliḥ ibn Abī al-Akhdar reporting from al-Zuhrī, and Ṣāliḥ is weak.
Mālik transmitted it from al-Zuhrī, and from Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyab in mursal form. Al-Dāraquṭnī said: ʿUmar ibn Qays connected the report via al-Zuhrī, yet Mālik’s version is the sounder one. There is also a corroborating narration from Ibn ʿUmar, recorded by ʿAbd al-Razzāq with a strong chain. Accordingly, the mawqūf report is treated as marfūʿ, and Allah knows best.
Ibn al-Qayyim affirmed in Zād al-Maʿād that the hadith is sound, and al-Ḥāfiẓ judged the supporting chain to be strong.
