618 – From ʿUrwah al-Bāriqī (may Allah be pleased with him): “The Prophet ﷺ gave him one dinar to purchase an animal for the ʿīd sacrifice or a sheep. With that dinar he bought two sheep, then sold one of them for a dinar. He came back to the Messenger of Allah with a sheep and a dinar, whereupon the Prophet prayed that his trading be blessed; thereafter, had he bought mere dust he would have profited from it.”
Narrated by the Five except al-Nasāʾī. Al-Bukhārī also includes it within a longer report but does not quote its exact wording. (1) Al-Tirmidhī supplied a corroborating narration from Ḥakīm ibn Ḥizām. (2)
Hadith grading:
Its chain is ḥasan (sound).
The author states that it is narrated by the Five except al-Nasāʾī and that its principal version appears in al-Bukhārī. In At-Talkhīṣ it is noted that Saʿīd ibn Zayd is in the chain and scholars differ about him. Al-Mundhirī and al-Nawawī judged the isnād to be ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ, while Ibn al-Qaṭṭān, al-Khaṭṭābī, and az-Zaylaʿī leaned toward the view that the report is broken (munqaṭiʿ) because Shabīb ibn Gharqadah says, “The household related it to us.” Ibn Ḥajar, in Fatḥ al-Bārī, held that the correct view is that the chain is continuous (muttasil) though it contains an unnamed narrator; that unnamed narrator is Saʿīd ibn Zayd ibn Dirham al-Azdī. Ḥarb said, “I heard Aḥmad praise him.” The hadith has further support in al-Tirmidhī from Ḥakīm ibn Ḥizām.
As for the supporting narration from Ḥakīm ibn Ḥizām, its transmitter from Ḥakīm is Ḥabīb ibn Thābit, and the report was deemed weak by al-Tirmidhī, al-Bayhaqī, and al-Khaṭṭābī, who said that it
