Tawḍīḥ al-AḥkāmAbd Allah al-Bassam

36 – On the authority of Laqīṭ ibn Sabrah (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ declared, “Perfect the ablution, run your fingers between one another, and be thorough in drawing water into the nose—unless you are fasting.” It was narrated by the Four, and Ibn Khuzaymah graded it sound.
Abū Dāwūd records a variant: “When you perform ablution, rinse your mouth.” (1)

Status of the ḥadith:
The report is ṣaḥīḥ.
The compiler notes that Ibn Khuzaymah authenticated it, and in at-Talkhīṣ he adds: it was transmitted by al-Shāfiʿī, Ibn al-Jārūd, Ibn Khuzaymah, Ibn Ḥibbān, al-Ḥākim, al-Bayhaqī, and by the authors of the four Sunan, in both extended and abridged forms. It was also declared sound by al-Tirmidhī, al-Baghawī, and Ibn al-Qaṭṭān.
In the same chapter there is the ḥadith of Ibn ʿAbbās: “Forcefully expel the water from your nose twice—or three times,” related by Abū Dāwūd, Ibn Mājah, Ibn al-Jārūd, and al-Ḥākim, and authenticated by Ibn al-Qaṭṭān.

Vocabulary of the ḥadith:
• asbig: from isbāgh, connoting breadth and completion. “Asbig,” “khallil,” and “bālig” are all imperatives—verbs that call on the addressee to act; by origin the imperative is built on a quiescent ending. Thus asbig al-wuḍūʾ means: give each limb its full due in washing, i.e., complete and perfect the ablution.
Al-Qāmūs states: “Asbig the ablution” means to let the water reach every proper place.
• khallil: interlacing the fingers, i.e., spreading them so that water flows between them; what is intended is the fingers
