Tawḍīḥ al-AḥkāmAbd Allah al-Bassam
  1. Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “I bought some oil in the market. After the purchase was finalized, a man met me and offered me a handsome profit for it. I was about to strike hands with him to seal the deal when someone behind me grabbed my arm. I turned around—it was Zayd ibn Thābit. He said, ‘Do not sell it where you bought it until you have moved it to your own place, for the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—forbade selling goods at the very spot where they are purchased until the traders have carried them to their own quarters.’”
Reported by Aḥmad and Abū Dāwūd—the wording is Abū Dāwūd’s—and declared authentic by Ibn Ḥibbān and al-Ḥākim. (1)

Hadith grading
The hadith is authentic, and its original wording appears in both Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī and Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim from Ibn ʿUmar. It has several strong chains of transmission:

  1. Through Nāfiʿ from Ibn ʿUmar, traced back to the Prophet. Mālik narrated it, and through Mālik it was taken by al-Bukhārī, Muslim, Abū Dāwūd, al-Nasāʾī and Aḥmad, all of them via Mālik from Nāfiʿ; several others also corroborated Nāfiʿ.
  2. Through ʿAbd Allāh ibn Dīnār from Ibn ʿUmar; narrated by Mālik, al-Bukhārī, Muslim, al-Nasāʾī, al-Shāfiʿī, al-Ṭaḥāwī, al-Bayhaqī and Aḥmad through various routes from Ibn Dīnār.
  3. Through al-Qāsim ibn Muḥammad from Ibn ʿUmar; Abū Dāwūd, al-Nasāʾī, al-Ṭaḥāwī and Aḥmad transmitted it by two chains: the first contains an unidentified narrator, and the second includes Ibn Lahīʿa, who is weak.
