34 – Abu Hurayrah (Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “When any one of you awakens from his sleep, let him blow water out of his nose three times, for Satan spends the night upon his nose.” Agreed upon. (1)

Vocabulary of the hadith:
• fal-yastanthir: the lām here is the lām of command (imperative).
• istayqaẓa: to awaken from sleep without being roused by someone else.
• manāmihi: his sleep; compare the Qur’anic verse about Abraham: “My dear son, I have seen in a dream that I must sacrifice you” (37:102). The term can also function as a verbal noun indicating the time of the act.
• Satan (al-shayṭān): Linguists give two etymologies:

1. From shatana – “to be far (from the truth)”; in this case the final nūn is part of the root.
2. From shāṭa yashīṭu – “to perish/burn”; here the yāʾ is original and the nūn an added consonant, the reverse of the first.
   Satan is a wicked, corrupt creature of Allah, the singular of devils. They belong to the unseen realm; Allah alone knows the manner of their creation. They are the progeny of Iblīs, and Allah has granted them the ability to assume different forms for a wisdom He willed.
   • yabītu: “to pass the night,” whether asleep or awake.
   • khayshūmihi: the upper interior part of the nose (khā’ with fatḥah, silent yā’, and shīn with ḍammah).
