33 – ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr (may Allah be pleased with him) described the Prophet’s ablution: “Then he wiped over his head, inserted his two index fingers into his ears, and with his thumbs wiped the outer parts of the ears.”
It was recorded by Abū Dāwūd and al-Nasāʾī, and Ibn Khuzaymah declared it authentic.⦗1⦘

The report is ḥasan (reliably sound). Abū Dāwūd transmitted it through his chain from ʿAmr ibn Shuʿayb, from his father, from his grandfather. Al-Mundhirī notes in Tahdhīb al-Sunan that it is also found in al-Nasāʾī (140) and Ibn Mājah (422).
A number of leading scholars have refrained from relying on ʿAmr ibn Shuʿayb. Ibn ʿAdī said: “People have avoided his narrations from his father from his grandfather from the Prophet ﷺ and did not include them in the Ṣaḥīḥ collections.” Abū l-Ḥasan ibn al-Qaṭṭān remarked: “To us, ʿAmr ibn Shuʿayb is weak.”
Others, however, accredited him. Al-ʿAjlī said, “Trustworthy.” Ibn Maʿīn and Aḥmad declared, “We sometimes accept his reports.” Al-Bukhārī stated, “I have seen Aḥmad, al-Ḥumaydī, and Isḥāq cite the ḥadīth of ʿAmr ibn Shuʿayb from his father from his grandfather as evidence.”
Ibn Daqīq al-ʿĪd observed: “This ḥadīth is ṣaḥīḥ according to those who authenticate the narrations of ʿAmr ibn Shuʿayb, for its isnād is sound.”
Al-Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Ḥajar writes in Tahdhīb al-Tahdhīb that some scholars declared ʿAmr ibn Shuʿayb weak without qualification, whereas the majority deemed him reliable, though a few criticized specifically his transmissions from his father from his grandfather. In al-Talkhīṣ he adds: “It comes through authentic chains,” and Ibn al-Qayyim notes that the four leading Imams accepted it as evidence.
