659 – ʿIkrimah narrates from al-Ḥajjāj ibn ʿAmr al-Anṣārī (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Whoever’s bone is broken or who becomes lame has been released from his state of iḥrām, but he must perform the ḥajj the following year.” ʿIkrimah added, “I asked Ibn ʿAbbās and Abū Hurayrah about this, and they both replied, ‘He has spoken the truth.’” The Five narrated it, and al-Tirmidhī graded it ḥasan. Hadith Grading:
Al-Tirmidhī said, “This ḥadith is ḥasan.” More than one transmitter related it from al-Ḥajjāj ibn al-Ṣawwāf, who is regarded by the ḥadith scholars as trustworthy and precise. It appears in the Musnad of Aḥmad and the Sunan collections. Ibn ʿAbd al-Hādī stated in al-Muḥarrar: “This ḥadith is also reported through the chain ʿIkrimah → ʿAbd Allāh ibn Rāfiʿ → al-Ḥajjāj, and that version is the sounder one,” as affirmed by al-Bukhārī.
Lexical Notes:
• kusira (“was broken”): passive form of kasara, meaning to separate a hard object without anything penetrating it; hence a fracture.
• ʿaraja (“became lame”): pronounced with a fatḥah on both the ʿayn and the rāʾ; it refers to an acquired injury to the leg. If the limp is congenital the rāʾ is pronounced with a kasrah.
