Glossary of the ḥadith:
• Dubaʿah: with ḍammah on the ḍād and fatḥah on the bāʾ; she was the Prophet’s cousin, the daughter of al-Zubayr ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib. She married al-Miqdād ibn al-Aswad and bore him ʿAbd Allāh and Karīmah.
• “Ill” (shākīyah): to complain of an ailment; one says, “He complained of his illness,” so he is shākī and she is shākīyah.
• “Stipulate” (ishtariṭī): from sharaṭa, meaning to make something binding. In this context it denotes that the pilgrim, upon entering iḥrām, places a condition before his Lord that if an enemy prevents him, or he is detained by sickness, loss, or lack of funds, he may exit iḥrām without offering a sacrificial animal, fasting, or making up the rites, and that he will receive the benefit of the condition.
• “My place of release” (maḥillī): with fatḥah on the mīm and kasrah on the ḥāʾ, derived from ḥalla, “to exit iḥrām,” meaning the point at which I leave the state of iḥrām for Hajj or ʿumrah, whether defined by time or place.
• “Wherever You restrain me”: that is, in whatever location and at whatever time I am held back; that will be the place and time at which I exit my iḥrām.
