Chapter: Missing the Rites (al-Fawāt) and Being Prevented (al-Iḥṣār)
657 – Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was prevented, so he shaved his head, resumed relations with his wives, and sacrificed the animals he had brought, and then the following year he performed ʿumrah.” Narrated by al-Bukhārī (1).
Vocabulary of the ḥadīth
• “The Messenger was prevented” (uḥṣira Rasūl Allāh): the verb ḥaṣara yaḥṣuru ḥaṣran—used in the patterns ḍaraba and naṣara—means to confine or restrain. Here it refers to Quraysh blocking the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) from completing his ʿumrah at al-Hudaybiyah, after which he agreed to return home that year and come back the next.
• “His hady”: the term hady (sacrificial offering) denotes the animals driven to the Noble Kaʿbah as an act of worship and as food for the poor of the sanctuary. Ibn ʿAbbās related that they were seventy camels, among them a camel that had belonged to Abū Jahl, bearing on its forehead a silver ornament. It had been taken among the spoils of Badr and was led with the sacrificial animals to vex the idolaters.
• “Qābilan” (the following year): the opposite of dābiran. Here it means “the next year,” when the Prophet performed the ʿUmrah of Compensation in the seventh year after the Hijrah.
