651 – ʿĀʾishah (may Allah be pleased with her) related that the Prophet ﷺ said to her, “Your ṭawāf of the House and between Ṣafā and Marwah is enough for both your Hajj and your ʿUmrah.” Narrated by Muslim (1).
What is taken from the ḥadith:
1 – During the Farewell Pilgrimage, ʿĀʾishah (may Allah be pleased with her) had entered iḥrām for an ʿUmrah with the intention of enjoying its rites until Hajj (tamattuʿ). She began menstruating near Mecca, so the Prophet ﷺ instructed her to merge the Hajj into the ʿUmrah. She complied and thus became a qārinah (one combining the two rites). Consequently, she neither performed ṭawāf nor saʿy until after standing at ʿArafah, spending the night in Muzdalifah, and stoning Jamrat al-ʿAqabah. Afterwards she said, “Messenger of Allah, I feel uneasy because I did not circumambulate the House when I made Hajj.” He then ordered her brother ʿAbd al-Raḥmān to take her to Tanʿīm on the night of the fourteenth, where she performed an extra ʿUmrah.
2 – The report shows that a qārin is only obliged to perform one ṭawāf and one saʿy. This is the position of the majority of scholars, including the three Imams. The Ḥanafīs, however, require two ṭawāfs and two saʿys, citing narrations from ʿUmar and ʿAlī (may Allah be pleased with them) recorded by al-Zaylaʿī in Nasb al-Rāyah.
3 – The ḥadith indicates that saʿy is valid only when preceded by a ṭawāf that is part of the pilgrimage rites; otherwise it is invalid.
4 – The acts of ʿUmrah are subsumed within the acts of Hajj for a qārin, as Muslim records from Ibn ʿAbbās that the Prophet ﷺ said, “ʿUmrah has been incorporated into Hajj until the Day of Resurrection.”
