649 – Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ addressed us on Yawm al-Naḥr (the Day of Sacrifice) …” The report is agreed upon (1).
650 – Sarra’ bint Nabhan (may Allah be pleased with her) recounted: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ delivered a sermon to us on Yawm al-Ruʾūs (the Day of the Heads) and said, ‘Is this not the middle of the Days of Tashrīq? …’” The ḥadith was narrated by Abu Dawud with a sound chain (2).
• Status of ḥadith 650
The narration of Sarra’ is judged ḥasan (sound).
The author states: “Abu Dawud transmitted it with a ḥasan chain.”
Al-Shawkani remarked: “Abu Dawud and al-Mundhiri remained silent about the ḥadith of Sarra’ bint Nabhan.”
Al-Haythami said in Majmaʿ al-Zawāʾid: “Its transmitters are the transmitters of the Ṣaḥīḥ.”
• Vocabulary of the two ḥadiths
– Yawm al-Naḥr (Day of Sacrifice): the tenth of Dhu al-Ḥijjah, the day of ʿId al-Aḍḥā, so called because the sacrificial offerings (hady and uḍḥiyah) are slaughtered then.
– Sarra’: with an initial sīn, a doubled rāʾ, followed by an extended alif; she is Sarra’ bint Nabhan al-Ghaniyyah from the tribe of Ghani, an Adnanite Muḍari tribe.
– Yawm al-Ruʾūs (Day of the Heads): the eleventh of Dhu al-Ḥijjah, the first of the three Days of Tashrīq. It is named so because people often eat on this day the heads of the sacrificial animals slaughtered on Yawm al-Naḥr. It is also called Yawm al-Qarr (the Day of Rest).
