646 – ʿĀ’ishah — may Allah be pleased with her — reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Once you have cast the pebbles, perfume and everything else become lawful for you, except women.” Recorded by Aḥmad and Abū Dāwūd, and there is weakness in its chain of transmission (1).
Hadith grading:
Ibn al-Mulaqqin and al-Mundhirī said: its isnād is ḥasan.
In al-Talkhīṣ it is stated: Aḥmad, Abū Dāwūd, al-Dāraqutnī and al-Bayhaqī narrated it from ʿĀ’ishah as a marfūʿ report; all its routes revolve around al-Ḥajjāj ibn Arṭāt, who is weak and a mudallis, and the remaining chains likewise revolve around him.
Ibn Maʿīn said: “He is truthful but practices tadlīs”; Muslim related his reports alongside corroborating narrations. Both al-Mundhirī and Ibn al-Mulaqqin graded the ḥadīth ḥasan.
It is also transmitted from al-Ḥasan al-ʿUrnī on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās: “When you have stoned the Jamrah, everything becomes lawful for you except women,” and by another route from Ibn ʿUmar. All of these carry the ruling of a marfūʿ report. Allah knows best.
Points derived from the ḥadīth:
- The report indicates that the first stage of release (the initial taḥallul), which permits everything to the pilgrim except women, is not achieved unless the two acts are combined: stoning (ramy) and shaving (ḥalq).
- It also implies that sexual intercourse and intimate contact with women do not become permissible until the complete release is obtained, which is accomplished by performing the stoning, the shaving, Ṭawāf al-Ifāḍah, and the Saʿy for anyone who performed Ṭawāf al-Qudūm but has not yet completed the Saʿy.
