640 – On the authority of Jābir (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stoned the Jamrah on the Day of Sacrifice in the forenoon, but on the days that followed he would not stone until the sun had passed its zenith.” Narrated by Muslim (1).
What is learned from the ḥadīth:
-
It was mentioned earlier that the recommended time for stoning Jamrat al-ʿAqabah is after sunrise, in accordance with the previous ḥadīth of Ibn ʿAbbās, and that the permissible time begins before dawn on the Night of Sacrifice. The present ḥadīth corroborates that report, for it records the Prophet’s ﷺ deed, confirmed by his statement: “Learn your rites from me.”
-
The ḥadīth is proof that the stoning of the three Jamrahs during the Days of Tashrīq is not to be performed until the sun has declined from the meridian. Al-Nawawī said in his commentary on Muslim: “Our school—the Shāfiʿīs—together with Mālik, Aḥmad, and the overwhelming majority of scholars, hold that stoning on the three days is impermissible before the sun declines. Abū Ḥanīfah and Isḥāq allow it on the third day before the meridian. Our evidence is that the Prophet ﷺ stoned as described and said, ‘Take your rites from me.’”
Scholarly disagreement:
It was stated earlier that the majority of scholars hold the starting time for stoning during the three Days of Tashrīq to be the sun’s decline. Consensus exists that the period of permissibility lasts until sunset; they differ, however, over whether it ends precisely at sunset or extends into the night until dawn.
