636 – ʿUrwah ibn Muḍarris (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Whoever attends this prayer of ours—meaning the dawn prayer at Muzdalifah—stands with us until we move on, and had already stood at ʿArafah at any time, night or day, his pilgrimage is complete and he has carried out his rites.” Narrated by the Five, and declared authentic by al-Tirmidhi and Ibn Khuzaymah. Grade of the hadith:
The hadith is ṣaḥīḥ.
In al-Talkhīṣ it is stated: It was related by Aḥmad, the compilers of the Sunan, Ibn Ḥibbān, al-Ḥākim, ad-Dāraquṭnī, and al-Bayhaqī with various wordings from ʿUrwah ibn Muḍarris. It was judged authentic by ad-Dāraquṭnī, al-Ḥākim, and Qāḍī Abū Bakr ibn al-ʿArabī, who said it meets their criteria. Al-Haythamī added: the narrators in Aḥmad’s chain are the narrators of the Ṣaḥīḥ.
Vocabulary of the hadith:
– “Whoever attends” (man shahida): whoever is present.
– “this prayer of ours”: the dawn prayer at Muzdalifah.
– “until we move on” (nadfaʿ): i.e., until we depart from Muzdalifah to Minā.
– “his tafath” (tafathahu): with an open tā, a fā, and a thā. As al-Nihāyah explains, tafath is the grooming a pilgrim performs after leaving the state of ihram, such as trimming the moustache, clipping the nails, plucking the underarm hair, and shaving the pubic region. A man is called tafith, and a woman tafithah.
