634 – Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ told us, “Do not stone the Jamrah until the sun has risen.” It was transmitted by the five compilers except al-Nasāʾī, and the chain is interrupted. (1)
635 – ʿĀʾishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: “The Prophet ﷺ allowed Umm Salamah to depart on the night of the Day of Sacrifice. She stoned the Jamrah before dawn, then continued on and performed the Ifāḍah.” Recorded by Abū Dāwūd, and its isnād meets Muslim’s criteria. (2)
Status of the two hadiths
Regarding the report of Ibn ʿAbbās, al-Ḥāfiẓ declared it ḥasan in Fatḥ al-Bārī; it has additional chains cited by al-Albānī in Irwāʾ al-Ghalīl, and Ibn Ḥibbān graded it ṣaḥīḥ. Nevertheless, Ibn ʿAbd al-Hādī and al-Ḥāfiẓ noted that its isnād is interrupted.
As for the report of ʿĀʾishah, al-Ḥākim and al-Bayhaqī also collected it, and its narrators are those found in the authentic collections. Ibn ʿAbd al-Hādī observed that its narrators are those of Muslim, and al-Bayhaqī said: “Its chain is sound, free of blemish.”
Vocabulary
Fa-afāḍat: al-Jawharī explains, “Afaḍa al-nās min ʿArafāt ilā Jamʿ” means the people moved on; every such departure is called ifāḍah. Here it signifies that after Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) stoned Jamrat al-ʿAqabah she proceeded to Mecca and performed Ṭawāf al-Ifāḍah, one of the pillars of Hajj.
