Tawḍīḥ al-AḥkāmAbd Allah al-Bassam

Vocabulary of the ḥadith (continued)
– manḥar: the designated spot where camels are slaughtered. Some scholars say the Prophet’s manḥar was by the first Jamrah, the one adjacent to Masjid al-Khayf.
– hāhunā: hā is a particle used to draw attention; hunā is an adverb indicating a nearby location (“here”).
– Jamʿ: another name for Muzdalifah, so called because the pilgrims gather (yajtamiʿūna) there.
– riḥāl: from the verb rahala, “to set out and travel.” A man’s riḥāl are his belongings and provisions; here it refers to his encampment.
– mawqif: from waqafa, “to stand.” A mawqif is the place of standing.

Lessons drawn from the ḥadith

  1. It is recommended to slaughter the sacrificial animals in Mina. The intended blood is that of tamattuʿ, qirān, and the voluntary hajj offerings. The blood of ʿumrah is preferably shed in Mecca. As for an obligatory sacrifice incurred by omitting a rite or committing a prohibition: if the cause arose inside the sanctuary, the animal should be slaughtered at that very spot within the sanctuary; if the prohibited act occurred outside, then it may be done where it occurred, though sacrificing inside the sanctuary is also permissible.
  2. The sacrifice may be carried out anywhere in Mina, for the whole of Mina is a slaughter-site.
  3. All of Jamʿ is a valid standing place, so wherever the pilgrim stops in Muzdalifah, it suffices. Its boundaries have already been detailed.
  4. The entire plain of ʿArafah is a standing place; any spot where one stands and supplicates is sufficient and the pilgrimage is valid. The limits of the site were mentioned earlier.
  5. If it is easy to stand at the very spot where the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, stood in ʿArafah and Muzdalifah, that is preferable; if doing so is difficult, it is not recommended.
  6. The purified Islamic law is founded on ease and leniency: no onerous burdens, hardship, or difficulty are imposed; its basis is simplicity and facilitation.
