622 – Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “I sacrificed right here, yet the whole of Mina is a place of sacrifice, so slaughter your animals in your encampments. And I stood right here, yet the whole of ‘Arafah is a standing place. And I stood right here, yet the whole of Jamʿ (Muzdalifah) is a standing place.” Narrated by Muslim (1).
Vocabulary of the ḥadith
– naḥartu (I sacrificed): One says, “naḥara al-baʿīr” (he slaughtered the camel) by stabbing it with a knife in its lower neck—the point of sacrifice. This mode of slaughter, called nahr, applies exclusively to camels.
– Mina: One of the sacred sites. Today it is a large township equipped with public utilities and government offices that serve the pilgrims of the Sacred House and provide ease in performing their rites. The legal rulings concerning Mina will be discussed, Allah willing.
• Western boundary: the Jamrat al-ʿAqabah.
• Eastern boundary: Wadi Muḥassir, which separates Mina from Muzdalifah.
ʿAṭā’ ibn Abī Rabāḥ said: “Mina extends from al-ʿAqabah to Muḥassir.”
• Northern and southern boundaries: the two long mountains flanking it. The northern one is Thabīr al-Athabirah; the southern is al-Ṣābiḥ, at the foot of which stands Masjid al-Khayf. Everything enclosed by these four limits counts as Mina.
Some scholars added: Whatever portion of these mountains faces Mina belongs to it, whereas what lies behind them does not.
