10 – For a tawaf (circumambulation) to be valid one must begin at the corner that houses the Black Stone.
11 – It is recommended to touch or kiss the Black Stone at the start of tawaf and each time one comes level with it in every circuit.
12 – It is recommended for men to trot (raml) in the first three circuits and to walk normally in the remaining four; raml is confined to the Arrival Tawaf (ṭawāf al-qudūm).
13 – It is recommended to pray the two rakʿahs of tawaf behind the Station of Abraham. The Prophet ﷺ then recited, “Take the Station of Abraham as a place of prayer” (Q 2:125); his action thus explains that the prayer mentioned in the verse is these two rakʿahs and that the Station of Abraham is the well-known stone.
14 – It is recommended to touch the Black Stone after finishing the two rakʿahs of tawaf and before beginning the saʿy; by unanimous agreement of the scholars this is not obligatory.
15 – The Shaykh said: Hajj comprises three tawafs:
– A tawaf performed on entering Mecca, called the Arrival Tawaf (ṭawāf al-qudūm).
– The second tawaf comes after ʿArafah; it is called the Tawaf of Ifadah (ṭawāf al-ifāḍah) and is the indispensable obligatory tawaf.
– The third tawaf is for anyone who intends to depart from Mecca; it is the Farewell Tawaf (ṭawāf al-wadāʿ). If one performs saʿy after any one of these tawafs it is sufficient, and had saʿy not depended on a preceding tawaf, ʿĀʾishah (Allah be pleased with her) would not have postponed it.
16 – Whenever a tawaf is to be followed by saʿy, it is sunnah for the pilgrim to return to the Black Stone and touch it before starting the saʿy if possible, because tawaf begins with its istilam and, by analogy, so should the saʿy. When no saʿy is to follow, he does not touch the Stone after the two rakʿahs.
18 – When someone performing ʿumrah—even an ʿumrah of tamattuʿ—begins tawaf, he stops the talbiyah, for the talbiyah is a response to the call to worship, whereas starting tawaf marks the commencement of release from ihram.
