Tawḍīḥ al-AḥkāmAbd Allah al-Bassam
  1. With regard to waras and saffron, the Prophet ﷺ mentioned them to signal that every form of fragrance is forbidden; this applies equally to men and women in a state of iḥrām. The pilgrim may not use perfume in any manner—whether by wearing it on clothing, applying it to the body, eating or drinking it, or employing it in any other way.

Some of the wisdoms behind this ruling:

  1. The pilgrim arrives dishevelled, dusty, and bare-headed; in such a state his heart is nearer to his Lord, unenticed by outward show, unallured by ornament, and untempted by worldly adornment.
  2. This appearance engenders humility, and humble submission before Allah is the very core and spirit of worship.
  3. His garb reminds him of the Day of Resurrection, when he will stand before his Lord naked and barefoot. Remembering that awe-inspiring scene brings him closer to Allah, moves him to earnest supplication, fills him with fear of Him and hope in Him.
  4. This and all other acts of worship point to Muslim unity and mutual solidarity. They underscore equality: the pilgrims’ dress and lodging are made the same so that no one can boast over another—neither individual over individual, nor rich over poor, nor strong over weak. All stand in one place, engaged in a single act of worship, pursuing one goal; this simple attire unites hearts and harmonizes souls.
  5. The distinctive garments constantly remind the pilgrim that he is in iḥrām, prompting him to increase in supplication and remembrance and to guard himself against the prohibited matters.
  6. As for women, their dress adheres to the juristic maxim “warding off harm takes precedence over procuring benefit,” so they remain modestly covered and shielded from temptation, especially in this setting.
