Chapter: Entering into ihram and matters related to it
606 – Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said, “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not commence his ihram except from the mosque.” Agreed upon (1).
Vocabulary of the hadith:
– Aḥalla: entered the state of ihram and raised his voice with the talbiyah.
– The mosque: the mosque at Dhu al-Ḥulayfah, nowadays called “Abyār ʿAlī.” It has already been noted that this is the miqat of the people of Madinah and of anyone who passes by it.
Lessons drawn from the hadith:
- It is prescribed to recite the talbiyah when entering ihram, for it is the emblem of Hajj and ʿUmrah just as the takbir is the emblem of the prayer.
- Ihram is the first obligatory act with which a person intending Hajj or ʿUmrah begins, because it marks entry into the rites, just as the opening takbir marks entry into the prayer.
- The hadith pinpoints that the Prophet ﷺ began his talbiyah at the mosque; Ibn ʿUmar mentioned this in response to those who said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ began his ihram from al-Baydaʾ.
- The reports vary regarding the place from which the Prophet ﷺ raised his voice with the talbiyah during that pilgrimage. Ibn ʿUmar affirmed that it was from the mosque, while Muslim (1218) records in the narration of Jabir, “Then he mounted…”

* مفردات الحديث:
