about thirty years ago by a committee that had travelled from Mecca for the express purpose of fixing the limits of the miqāt and preventing any encroachment upon it.
Its western boundary is Wadi al-ʿAṣlāʾ ash-Sharqiyyah, a seasonal stream that flows from south to north until its waters empty into Wadi aḍ-Ḍarībah. From there the western limit continues northward, keeping in line with Wadi al-ʿAṣlāʾ, until it meets the opposing mountain on the northern side. West of this course lies another south–north flood channel, roughly parallel to the Eastern ʿAṣlāʾ, called al-ʿAṣlāʾ al-Gharbiyyah (the Western ʿAṣlāʾ); the two channels are about 500 metres apart, and the Western ʿAṣlāʾ likewise empties into Wadi aḍ-Ḍarībah. The earlier committee had set up stone markers on the eastern bank of the Western ʿAṣlāʾ. The local guides told us that this in fact lies beyond the true boundary and that those stones were placed only as a protective buffer zone (ḥimā) for the miqāt, for the actual western edge of the miqāt is the Eastern ʿAṣlāʾ, as we have already explained: the archaeological remains lie to its east, and the ʿirq to which this miqāt is ascribed terminates at that line. We therefore recommend that the land between the Eastern and Western ʿAṣlāʾ remain a reserve for the miqāt, as designated by the previous committee, and that no one be allowed to cultivate or claim it, lest the miqāt be constricted by encroaching on its borders.
On the south, the miqāt is bounded by the summit of Jabal ʿIrq, running from its eastern end at the bed of Wadi al-Hanū to its western end where it meets the course of the Eastern ʿAṣlāʾ.
Its northern limit is the continuous range of mountains that rises north of Wadi aḍ-Ḍarībah, extending from the mouth of Wadi Ankhal where it joins Wadi aḍ-Ḍarībah in the east to the junction of Wadi aḍ-Ḍarībah with the Eastern ʿAṣlāʾ in the west.
The miqāt measures roughly 2,000 metres from east to west—the length of the aforementioned ʿirq—while its width varies with the gap between the two bounding mountains, narrowing and widening between 200 and 500 metres, as noted earlier.
As for the site on which to build the miqāt mosque and its facilities, the committee is of the view that they should be constructed in the open expanse
