at a coastal point called al-Mujayrimah. The same name is used for the valley in all its stretches—from its tributaries to its mouth—and for the spot along it where pilgrims enter the state of ihram. The Tihāmah highway of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia runs through this location, and the section of Tihāmah on the valley’s southern bank lies about 120 km from Mecca.
I was one of the committee members who confirmed the accuracy of its boundary when the coastal road was laid out.
• “hunna lahunna”: that is, these mawāqīt are for these lands, meaning their inhabitants. Strictly speaking, the wording should be “hunna lahum,” and that form occurs in some authenticated narrations.
• “fa-min ḥaythu anshaʾ”: the prefixed faʾ functions as the apodosis of the conditional, meaning that one’s miqat is the point from which he sets out toward Mecca.
